This app is divide into three sections, accessed using the tab buttons near the top of the page. This introduction is in the first tab, Intro. Your first time here, you should visit the "Choose Models" tab and then the "My Models" tab. When you return to this app after you have chosen models, it will open on the "My Models" tab.

Here, you will choose your models. Lines which start with "+" are expandible menus.

The first time you click on a model, you will see the Find a Station dialog, where you will choose a weather station. Search for any place, and you will see a list of places with matching names. For each place, there will be a list of nearby stations. When you select a station, the app will go to the next step, which is the model's details dialog. If you ever want to choose another station, or a different station, use the Add a station button from any model's details dialog.

When you have at least one station selected, you will see the model's details dialog. Here, you will need to select which stations you want the model run for. Some models have other questions which you will also need to answer. Many models ask for a date, such as a biofix date or a planting date. These specify "8 digits; YYYYMMDD format". This means you need to enter the year as 4 digits, the month as 2 digits, and then the day of the month as 2 digits. For example, for May 22nd, 2026, you would enter "20260522".

To remove a graph, return to this dialog and uncheck the box for the appropriate station. To remove a station, make sure the station's box is not checked for any models, and then reload the page.

This is where you will see your output. For each model and station, you will see a graphs and several buttons. (Not all buttons are present for all models.) The graphs have time on the horizontal axis and model output on the vertical axis. Due to space constraints, graphs may not include labels for all events in a model.

Show Model Details

Displays data about the model and any biofix date you supplied. For all models.

Show event table

Displays a table of the events defined in the model, and when they occurred or are expected to occur. For degree-day models.

Show daily table

Displays a table with a row for each day, showing that day's weather and degree-day accumulation. For degree-day models.

Graph Help

Shows directions on using the graph's features, including zoom and export. For all models and weather parameters.

Change Details

This is a short-cut back to the model's details dialog, where you can change which stations you want to run the model for, or change your answers to any other questions asked for this model. Use this to remove a graph, too. For all models and weather parameters.

Show daily summary table

Displays a table with one line for each day, summarizing the day's values. For hourly models and weather parameters.

Show full table

Displays a table of the data in the graph, with one line for each hour. These tables can be long. For hourly models and weather parameters.

Copy full table to clipboard as CSV

If you use this button and then paste into another program such as an editor or a spreadsheet, you can work with the data in your tool of choice. For hourly models and weather parameters.

Column headers used in the tables

Max °F, Min °F

The day's maximum and minimum temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit, from which degree-days are calculated.

DDs F today

The number of Degree-days, calculated using degrees Fahrenheit, which were added on this day. The details of how these are calculated depends on the model.

DDs F Cumu

Cumulative Degree-days, calculated using degrees Fahrenheit and accumulated since the start date. For many organisms, this value is a much better indicator of organism development than the number of days since the start date.

Events

Events are landmarks in the organism's development. Each event has an associated threshold; the model predicts the event when cumulative degree-days reach that threshold. The specific events included vary widely between models.

Count

The number of hourly data points for this day. Some of the points may be forecasts or estimates from nearby stations.

Source

Where each weather parameter values came from. These can be:

observed

Actual measurement.

fcast/...

Forecast, with an indication of the source of the forecast.

INTERP/...

Interpolated data, with an (admittedly cryptic) indication of which algorithm was used.

MISSING

We have no value for that hour.

Note that "MISSING" and "INTERP" are indications of an unreliable station, though one or two a day is unlikely to affect models appreciably.

Value

This is an index specific to the model, and it is the quantity shown on the graph. Generally, higher values mean higher disease risk, but only if the values come from the same model. Each model has its own arbitrary scale, so values from different models should not be compared.

Event or Class

These are descriptive phrases tell you how to interpret the value.

Scheduled automatic email delivery of the model outputs displayed in this app is available at no cost. An email subscription offers model results for these models, for multiple weather stations, on a schedule that you select. To subscribe, you will need a uspest.org account.

This app stores your inputs on your computer, using the "localstorage" interface (which is similar to cookies). It does this so that you do not have to re-enter your inputs each time you use the app. This information is sent only to uspest.org, where it is used to run models on your behalf, and may also be used to to collect statistics about use of uspest.org. No personal information is involved, and no information is communicated to third parties except for aggregated statistics.
